international figures of culture, media, legal sector and social
organizations are demanding the release of four Cubans imprisoned in the
United States in the website Voices for the Five, according to reports here
The website www.voicesforthefive.com invites Internet users to join this
new campaign with a message, photo or video message of rejection to the
imprisonment of Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez and
Antonio Guerrero, said the Belgian activist Katrien Demuynck , president of
the association Socialist Cuba Initiative.
They, along with Rene Gonzalez, were tried and convicted in the United
States to high prison terms after being arrested in Miami in 1998 for
alerting the island on plans of violent groups based in southern Florida.
According to Demuynck, also Europe's coordinator of Committee of Five, as
they are known internationally, the campaign announced the organization of
an International Commission of Inquiry on the case.
The meeting will be held on March 7 and 8 March next year at the
headquarters of the prestigious Law Society, in the center of the legal
area of London, meanwhile, parallel events such as concerts and discussions
with personalities will be held.
Terrorism against Cuba will be the theme which will host the event in its
first day, and in the second, the injustices in the judicial process
against the Cuban Five, Demuynck said.
She added that each day of the event, which also will be attended by
relatives of the Cuban fighters, solidarity organizations and social
movements of various nations, a summary and recommendations will be
prepared for delivery in Washington.
The Commission, which will hear testimony from René, is one of the most
important initiatives in the world in this campaign and will be jointly
organized by the European solidarity movement and the International
Association of Democratic Lawyers.
This international initiative will be the prelude to the holding of the
Third Denunciation and Solidarity Program "five days of action for the
Five" in Washington, in May 2014.
John Le Carré, Ricardo Alarcon, Emma Thompson, Miguel D'Escoto Brockmann,
Lord Rowan Williams, Fernando Morais, Noam Chomsky, Adolfo Perez Esquivel
and Günter Grass are among the personalities who have joined to launch the
