01/21/13 - Bernama - Cuban General Elections: Candidates Represent All Walks Of Life January 21, 2013 13:54 PM Cuban General Elections: Candidates Represent All Walks Of Life HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 21 (BERNAMA-NNN-ACN) -- The list of candidates contesting upcoming general elections mirrors a wide spectrum of Cuban society, according to the National Candidature Commission (CCN). Parliamentary elections will be held on Feb 3 for the 614 members of the National Assembly of People's Power. The list of candidates to provincial delegates includes 50 percent of women and similar figure of people linked to the production and service sectors, said CCN president Amarilys Perez. People of color make up 35 percent on the list, wile over 78 percent of candidates are university graduates and 20.3 percent finished senior high school. The average age of the candidates is 45 years, though all generations are represented, Perez said. Meanwhile, 78 percent of candidates to Parliament deputies were born after the 1959 Triumph of the Cuban Revolution, said Pedro Andres Aguila, who is also a member of the Candidature Commission and represents the National Small Farmer Association. The list includes representatives of the state and the non-state sectors, including independent farmers, cooperative members, self-employees, artists and members of non-government organizations, Aguila said. Significant enough are the candidacies of over 67 percent new deputies, with the possible re-election of 32.77 percent of current lawmakers, which is in tune with Cuban society. The average age was lowered to 48 years; only 27 candidates are over 70 years of age. Women are represented by a 49 percent and 37 percent belong to people of color. More than 80 percent of the candidates to deputies are university graduates, with only 17 percent having finished senior high, which will favor the future lawmakers' performance, said Aguila.
