03/05/13 -  Agencia de Información Nacional (Habana) - Cuban Vice-president Attends Opening of Cuban Surgery Congress

HAVANA, Cuba, March 5 (acn) Cuban vice-president Jose Ramon Machado Ventura
presided over in Havana the opening session of the 12th Cuban Surgery
Congress and the Symposium of the Latin American Surgery Federation.

During the session, attended by over 400 delegates from 200 countries, the
Cuban Surgery Society paid tribute to outstanding late surgeons Lazaro
Quevedo and Jorge F. Abraham.

In the presence of Cuban Health minister Roberto Morales, deputy minister
doctor Cristina Luna stressed the role of general surgery as part of
primary health attention as one of the main subjects to be addressed by the
Congress.

Doctor Luna noted that he forum takes place amidst ongoing transformations
and the consolidation of the work of the family doctors and nurses, who
contribute their excellent results to ambulatory surgery.

The deputy minister explained that over 40 percent of minimum access
surgeries administered in 2012 were carried out by general surgeons, linked
to the over 50 different surgery services currently operating on the
island.
