09/05/13 - Agencia de Información Nacional (Habana) - Cuban Largest Grassroots Organization Promotes Unity at National Congress
HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 5 (acn) The upcoming 8th National Congress of the
Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR), the largest Cuban
grassroots organization, will focus on unity in current times, said
organization' s national coordinator Carlos Rafael Miranda.
In statements to PL news agency, Miranda said that the Congress will not
provide a magic solution to current problems, though it will allow for
important debates and reflection as part of the process of transformations
underway in Cuba.
The official recalled that debates opened at the bases on January 4 with
further activities at municipal and provincial levels, in which discussions
and analysis focused on the struggle against illegalities, minor crimes,
and corruption, as well as on the need of concerted and united efforts by
He said that an updating of the organization's structures at the bases
resulted in 38 percent of leaders being young Cubans, a force that along
those who have been there for five decades gains important strength.
The 8th CDR Congress will take place September 26 to 28 with the attendance
of 460 delegates and 40 guests. The grassroots organization was founded on
September 28, 1960. CDR members participate in community tasks, sanitation,
support of economic and health projects, and the encouragement of citizen
participation in social activities.
