Mission Statement

Cuba-L Direct is a non-profit research organization made up of academics, analysts, intellectuals, artists, professionals and people who are committed to collecting and making available information on Cuba. We do not make policy recommendations to the people of Cuba, nor do we support exerting external pressure on its people or government. It is up to the people in Cuba to determine what is best for them. Our commitment is to provide current, up-to-the-minute, information and analysis. We also seek to become the resource-of-record that would serve the needs of researchers, academics, journalists, policy makers, activists and the informed public.

Who we are

The Cuba Electronic Information Collaboration Project combines the efforts of five institutions to foster a two way information exchange between information providers in the United States and Cuba. The two main providers are: Cuba-L Direct (US) and the magazine Temas (Cuba). The effort increases the accessibility of both Temas a nd Cuba-L Direct information service to Cuban, U.S. and international audiences. The project establishes mirror servers in Cuba and in the United States operated by technical partners on both sides (ISTEC in the United Sta tes and Centro de Informática y Sistemas Aplicados a la Cultura in Cuba). Each server carries all the materials available in the print version of the Cuban publication Temas as well as the material regularly distributed by Cuba-L Direct. Cuba-L Direct incorporates, as well, two Havana based information provideers - World Data Resear ch Center and Cine Cubano. The project makes available all the information materials in a searchable form. Acce ss to most of the materials and services are available free of charge, although some materials are available by paid subscriptions.

Cuba-L Direct is a New Mexico non profit organization that began to operate in 1986. It distributes informat ion in English and Spanish through e-mail using a listserver format, RSS and in a web page environment. Cuba-L d istributes daily an average of 30 to 60 pieces of information on Cuba generated by a wide variety of electroni c and print sources from around the world. The service includes news and other previously published materials as well as those written specifically for the service. Cuba-L is the longest on-going distributor of electronic materials on Cuba.

Cuba-L receives information from numerous collaborators in the United States, Cuba, Latin America , Canada a nd Europe. It includes the text, audio or video of speeches, official statements, news wires, newspaper articles and editorials, research reports, conference presentations and lectures as well as notices of forthcoming con ferences or government hearings. It distributes declassified information and also goes after details that the me dia missed. It is part of the project to develop a library of photos and other images from different sources. All the materials have been electronically archived and is searchable.

Cuba-L counts as clients scholars, policy institutes, journalists and individuals outside of Cuba as well as numerous institutes, ministries, research centers, media outlets and many others in the island itself.

Temas is Cuba’s leading journal on social sciences and humanities, political theory and ideology and began p ublication in 1995. TEMAS serves to facilitate reflection and debate on contemporary social and cultural thought in Cuba and for the past six years has provided a forum for the best work of Cuban researchers, students and academics, characterized by diverse positions and interpretations on current events from an integrated and multi disciplinary perspective. TEMAS has stimulated serious, high quality exchanges on a variety of themes with wri ters and scholars outside of Cuba, including Cubans resident in other countries. Temas thus provides space for p lurality within contemporary Cuba, the same plurality can be found by the generational differences and various currents of thought represented by its Editorial Board (see attached). Diversity is found as well in the work o f over 400 contributors to Temas, who through 28 editions of the magazine have addressed themes of great relevan ce to Cuban social and cultural development.

The magazine is directed especially to the Cuban, Latin American and Caribbean public. Its subscribers withi n Cuba include academic institutions and individuals, and also secondary schools and pedagogical institutes, pro vincial and municipal libraries, scientific institutions, military academies, religious centers, polytechnic s chools, government offices, non-governmental organizations, publishers, media outlets and museums.

TEMAS is a not-for-profit publication and does not serve as an official publication of any state or party in stitution. Its Editorial Board determines its editorial line and content. Its body of work is evaluated and appr oved by professionals who review submitted manuscripts anonymously and impartially.

Temas is published four times per year with a press run of 3,000 copies per edition. It is distributed in Cu ba via bookstores and subscriptions, and through similar mechanisms in Mexico, the United States and Puerto Rico . Up until the present Temas has been funded by the Fund for Cultural and Educational Development, an agency o f the Cuban Ministry of Culture. In spite of the efforts of supporting institutions such as the Latin American a nd Iberian Institute of the University of New Mexico, international distribution has proven very cost

Nuestra Misión

Cuba-L Direct es una organización dedicada a la investigación, sin fines de lucro, cuyos miem bros incluyen académicos, analistas, intelectuales, artistas, profesionales y personas en general comprom etidas con la recopilación y difusión de información relacionada con Cuba.

No formulamos recomendaciónes sobre políticas públicas orientadas al pueblo cubano, y nos oponemos a la aplicación de presiones externas a su pueblo y su gobierno. Consideramos que le corresp onde al pueblo cubano determinar lo que más les conviene. Nuestro compromiso es proveer informació n y análisis actualizados y de última hora. Nuestro objetivo es cumplir con el papel de ser el r ecurso fundamental capaz de atender las necesidades de investigadores, periodistas, funcionarios públicos , activistas, y el público deseoso de informarse en general.

El Proyecto para la Información y Colaboración Electrónica combina los esfuerzos de ci nco instituciones para estimular un intercambio de información retroalimentada entre proveedores de infor mación en los Estados Unidos y Cuba.

Los dos proveedores principales son: Cuba-L Direct (Estados Unidos) y la revista Temas (Cuba). Este esfuerz o aumenta la accesibilidad tanto de la revista Temas como de la lista Cuba-L Direct para los públicos int eresados en Cuba, los Estados Unidos, y a escala mundial.

El proyecto establece servidores espejo en Cuba y los Estados Unidos operados por socios técnicos en ambos lugares (ISTEC en Estados Unidos y el Centro de Informática y Sistemas Aplicados en Cuba).

Cada servidor provee todos los materiales disponibles en la versión impresa de la publicación cubana Temas además de todo el material distribuido con regularidad por Cuba-L Direct. Cuba-L Direct tam bién incorpora materiales de dos proveedores de información localizados en Cuba- World Data Resear ch Center y Cine Cubano.

Además el proyecto hace disponible todo el material de búsqueda en un formato accesible a pro cesos de búsqueda. El acceso a la mayoría de los materiales y servicios es gratis, aunque algunos materiales más especializados están disponibles a través de suscripciones pagadas.

Cuba-L Direct es una organización sin fines de lucro basada en Nuevo México que inició sus operaciones en 1986. Distribuye información en inglés y en español por correo electrónico empleando un formato de servidor de lista (listserv), RSS, y un ámbito de página Web. Distribuye diariamente entre 30 y 60 cápsulas informativas generadas por una amplia gama de fuentes electrónicas e impresas en todo el mundo.

Este servicio incluye noticias y otros materiales previamente impresos además de otros específicamente escritos para su difusión en esta Lista. Cuba-L es la fuente difusora de materiales electrónicos sobre Cuba de mayor antiguedad. Recibe también información de numerosos colaboradores en los Estados Unidos, Cuba, América Latina, Canadá y Europa.

Su acervo incluye los textos, versiones en audio y/o video de discursos, declaraciones oficiales, informers noticiosos transmitidos electrónicamente, artículos de periódicos, editoriales, informes de investigaciones, presentaciones y conferencias en congresos, además de noticias sobre congresos o audiencias gubernamentales próximas a realizarse. Distribuye informacón desclasificada y además profundiza en detalles que le hayan eludido a los medios. Es también parte del proyecto desarrollar un archivo de fotos y imágenes de fuentes diversas. Todo los materiales incluidos han sido archivados electrónicamente y accesibles a través de procesos y mecanismos de búsqueda.

Cuba-L cuenta entre sus clientes a estudiosos, institutos de investigación y nálisis sobre políticas públicas, periodistas e individuos ubicados fuera de Cuba, además de numerosos institutos, ministerios, centros de investigación, medios periodísticos, y muchos otros ubicados en Cuba como tal.

Temas es la revista principal en Cuba especializada en temas relacionadas con las ciencias sociales y las humanidades, teoría política e ideología, y comenzó a publicarse en 1995. TEMAS sirve para estimular la reflexión y el debate sobre el pensamiento contempóraneo en Cuba y durante los últimos 6 años ha proveido un foro para la difusión de los mejores trabajos de investigadoes, estudiantes académicos cubanos, caracterizándose por las posturas plurales e interpretaciones de perspectivas diversas desde ángulos integrales e interdisciplinarios.

TEMAS ha estimulado intercambios serios y de alto nivel y calidad sobre una gama variada de temas entre escritores y estudiosos fuera de Cuba, incluyendo cubanos residentes en el exterior. De esta manera Temas provee un espacio para la pluralidad ideológica y generacional dentro de la Cuba contemporánea, que se refleja en la diversidad de los miembros de su Comité Editorial (ver lista adjunta). También se refleja este compromiso con la pluralidad en los aportes diversos de sus más de 400 colaboradores, que a través de 28 ediciones de la revista han explorado temas de mucha relevancia para el desarrollo social y cultural en Cuba.

La revista está dirigida en particular al público cubano, latinoamericano, y caribeño. Sus suscriptores en Cuba incluyen instituciones académicas e individuos, y también escuelas secundarias, institutos pedagógicos, bibliotecas municipales y provinciales, instituciones ciéntificas, academias militares, centros religiosos, escuelas politécnicas, oficinas de gobiernos, organismos no-gubernamentales, editoriales, medios de comunicación museos.

TEMAS es una publicación sin fines de lucro y no una publicación oficial que sirva como vocero de cualquier institución estatal o partidaria. Su Comité Editorial define sus pautas y determina sus contenidos. Su contenido es evaluado por profesionales que revisan los textos sometidos para publicación de manera anónima e imparcial.

Temas se publica cuatro veces al año con un tiraje de 3,000 copias para cada edición de la revista. Se reparte en Cuba a través de librerias y suscripciones pagadas, y por conducto de mecanismos semejantes en México, los Estados Unidos, y Puerto Rico. Su financiamiento hasta ahora ha sido proveido por el Fondo para el Desarrollo Cultural y Educativo, un organismo del Ministerio cubano de Cultura. No obstante los esfuerzos de instituciones solidarias como el Instituto de Estudios Latinoamericanos e Ibéricos de la Universidad de Nuevo México, su distribución internacional ha resultado muy costosa.
